AI Summary
An IBAN in Pakistan is your existing bank account number in a 24-character international format: PK, two check digits, a four-letter bank code taken from the bank's SWIFT code, and a 16-digit account number. State Bank rules had banks issue IBANs by December 2012 and use them for payments by June 2013. You can find yours on your bank statement or cheque book, in some banking apps, through your bank's online IBAN generator, or at a branch.
An IBAN number (International Bank Account Number) is your existing bank account number written in a standard format that banks everywhere can check. In Pakistan it is always 24 characters: PK, 2 check digits, a 4-letter bank code and a 16-digit account number, for example PK24 MUCB 0646 6099 7100 0177 at MCB. You can find yours on your bank statement, in some banking apps, with your bank’s online IBAN generator, or at a branch. It isn’t a new account: your account number stays the same.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) set the format in its 2012 IBAN guidelines. Every Pakistani IBAN has four parts:
| Part | Length | Example (MCB) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country code | 2 letters | PK | The account is held in Pakistan |
| Check digits | 2 digits | 24 | Lets a bank catch a mistyped IBAN |
| Bank code | 4 letters | MUCB | First four letters of the bank’s SWIFT code (banks without one use a code from SBP’s PRISM system or one SBP assigns) |
| Account number | 16 digits | 0646609971000177 | Your account number, padded with zeros |
If your account number is shorter than 16 digits, zeros are added on the left. SBP’s example: account 2112345607 becomes 0000002112345607. Banks print the IBAN in groups of four so it’s easier to read.
Some banks fit the branch into the 16 digits. At Meezan Bank, the account part is 00, then your 4-digit branch code, then your 10-digit account number.
Bank codes, as shown by SBP and the banks:
| Bank | Code in the IBAN |
|---|---|
| MCB Bank | MUCB |
| HBL (Habib Bank) | HABB |
| Meezan Bank | MEZN |
| UBL | UNIL |
| Allied Bank | ABPA |
| Bank Alfalah | ALFH |
| Standard Chartered | SCBL |
| U Microfinance Bank | UMBL |
SBP told banks to generate IBANs for all customers by December 2012 and to use them for domestic and international payments by June 2013. Standard Chartered says use started on 1 July 2013, while UBL’s FAQ gives January 2014 for its customers.
No, but your account number is inside it. Standard Chartered and Meezan both say the IBAN isn’t a new account number and your existing number stays. The IBAN just adds PK, the check digits and the bank code in front.
Each account has its own IBAN, so two accounts mean two IBANs. A card number is not an IBAN: Standard Chartered notes that IBANs identify bank accounts, not credit cards.

| UBL | Bank statement; branch; UBL contact centre 021-111-825-888 |
| MCB Bank | MCB Live, under “Manage Raast ID” |
| HBL | HBL’s website links an IBAN generator under Remittance; it blocked us, so we couldn’t check it |
| Allied Bank | Online IBAN generator on abl.com |
| Bank Alfalah | IBAN calculator: enter the first 4 digits of your 14-digit account number, then the other 10 |
| Standard Chartered | IBAN calculator and validator on sc.com/pk |
| U Microfinance Bank | Cheque book and account statements; branch or helpline |
| NayaPay | In the app, under Add Money |
| SadaPay | In the app, under Load money |
The two check digits make a mistyped IBAN fail a simple maths test (modulus 97), and SBP’s guidelines say the paying bank should validate the IBAN before processing the payment. Meezan and Standard Chartered both have online IBAN validators. A pass only means the IBAN is well formed. SBP’s guidelines say the check doesn’t prove that the account exists, so check the account title your app shows before you confirm. HBL’s Raast steps, for example, ask you to check the recipient’s account title.

24 characters: the letters PK, 2 check digits, a 4-letter bank code and a 16-digit account number. Banks print it in groups of four, such as PK24 MUCB 0646 6099 7100 0177.
No, but it contains it. The IBAN is your existing account number, padded with zeros to 16 digits and preceded by PK, two check digits and your bank's code. Your account number doesn't change.
Use your bank's online IBAN generator: Meezan, Allied Bank, Bank Alfalah and Standard Chartered have one. You can also read it from your bank statement, or ask your branch or helpline.
NayaPay shows your 24-digit IBAN under Add Money in the app. SadaPay shows its IBAN under Load money.
Yes. UBL's FAQ says each bank account has its own IBAN, so if you have several accounts you have several IBANs.
