Banking & Payments · Money
Meezan Bank vs UBL, MCB and Bank Alfalah: all four are rated AAA. The real difference is Islamic profit sharing vs a 10% legal minimum (Sep 2026).
AI Summary
Meezan Bank, UBL, MCB and Bank Alfalah all hold AAA ratings from VIS or PACRA, reaffirmed in June 2026. Meezan, UBL and MCB charge the same for IBFT (free up to Rs 25,000 a month) and other-bank ATM withdrawals (Rs 35). The main difference is how savings profit is set: conventional banks must pay individuals at least 10% a year, while Islamic banks like Meezan share at least 75% of their pool yield. UBL has the most branches, 2,033 against Meezan's 1,115.
On Meezan Bank vs UBL, MCB or Bank Alfalah, no bank wins outright. All four hold the top AAA credit rating (June 2026), and Meezan (2025 fee schedule), UBL and MCB charge the same for transfers and other-bank ATM withdrawals. The real difference is how savings earn: conventional banks must pay individuals at least 10% a year (September 2026), while Meezan, a fully Islamic bank, shares profit from its pools at a rate not fixed in advance. Choose Meezan if Shariah compliance matters most; otherwise compare branches and fees.

Figures come from each bank’s latest rating report or its own documents, with the date of each figure.

UBL’s branch count jumped from 1,474 at the end of 2024 to 2,009 a year later, after Silk Bank was merged into it during 2025. About 21% of UBL’s deposits at the end of 2025 came from its operations outside Pakistan. MCB says its app, MCB Live, had over 2.2 million users by August 2026.
Meezan grew from 1,051 branches at the end of 2024 to 1,115 by March 2026. It became Pakistan’s first full Islamic commercial bank in 2002.
On credit ratings, it is level with the biggest conventional banks. VIS has rated Meezan AAA long term and A1+ short term every year since its upgrade in June 2021, most recently on 30 June 2026. UBL holds the same grades from VIS, and MCB and Bank Alfalah hold them from PACRA.
A rating is the agency’s view of the bank’s ability to repay what it owes, not a guarantee. It does show that, on this measure, choosing Islamic over conventional doesn’t mean taking more risk at these four banks.
One gap: MCB’s Islamic subsidiary, MCB Islamic Bank, is rated lower than its parent, at A+ long term (PACRA, 23 June 2026, outlook Positive). If you want Islamic banking within the MCB group, that is the bank you would deal with.
The rules for the two kinds of bank are different, so the honest answer is: it depends on the rate each bank declares.
Conventional banks (UBL, MCB, Bank Alfalah). The State Bank requires a minimum profit rate on rupee savings of individuals. It sits 50 basis points below SBP’s floor rate. With the floor at 10.50% and the policy rate at 11.50% (as of 15 September 2026), the minimum is 10% a year. Since 1 August 2026 it covers only individuals with a monthly average balance of up to Rs 10 million. Term deposits are not covered.
Islamic banks (Meezan, and the Islamic arms of the others). They don’t pay interest and aren’t bound by that minimum. Since 1 January 2025, the State Bank has required them to pay rupee savers at least 75% of the weighted average gross yield of their investment pools. The rate is not set in advance, so it can change.
What this means for you: a conventional savings account up to Rs 10 million has a legal floor, while a Meezan savings account has no fixed rate and follows its pool earnings. Ask each bank for its latest declared or indicative rate before you move money. See savings account profit rates for more.
For the services most people use, the fees are almost identical. The table uses UBL’s and MCB’s July–December 2026 fee documents and Meezan’s July–December 2025 schedule, the latest one we could open.

Meezan’s website blocked us on 10 October 2026, including its July–December 2026 schedule. Its fees may have changed since the 2025 schedule we used. Bank Alfalah’s website also blocked us, so it is not in this table.

Fee waivers matter more than the list prices. Meezan waives the issuance fee on one debit card for Rupee Current and Asaan Current Account holders, choosing from Visa Classic, Visa Gold, Mastercard Classic or PayPak. UBL’s Mukammal current account waives the debit card, cheque book, pay order and SMS fees if you keep a year-to-date average of Rs 25,000 or more.
Yes, so “Islamic or conventional” is not the same choice as “Meezan or another bank”.
The difference is that Meezan does only Islamic banking, across all 1,115 branches.

Neither is better across the board. Both are rated AAA and charge the same for IBFT and other-bank ATM withdrawals (Meezan's figures are from its 2025 schedule). UBL has more branches (2,033 against 1,115) and its own Islamic arm, UBL Ameen; Meezan is fully Islamic.
VIS reaffirmed Meezan's AAA long-term and A1+ short-term ratings on 30 June 2026, the top grades. UBL, MCB and Bank Alfalah hold the same grades from VIS or PACRA.
There is no rule that it does. Conventional banks must pay individuals at least 10% a year on savings up to Rs 10 million, as of September 2026. Islamic banks must instead pay at least 75% of their pools' weighted average gross yield, so their rate is not fixed in advance.
Yes. UBL runs 775 Islamic branches under the UBL Ameen brand, and MCB owns a separate bank, MCB Islamic Bank, with 323 branches.
