AI Summary

A solar AC in Pakistan is usually a hybrid DC inverter AC that takes solar panels directly and switches to the grid when sunlight falls. Haier lists the same 0.52 to 1.85 kW cooling input for its 1.5-ton Solar Hybrid-III and a grid-only 1.5-ton inverter AC, so the saving comes from the panels. On 18 Oct 2026 Haier's hybrids cost Rs 11,000 to Rs 16,000 more at retailers. It suits homes without solar; with a rooftop system, a normal inverter AC does the same job.

A solar AC sold in Pakistan is usually a hybrid DC inverter AC that takes solar panels directly and switches to the grid when sunlight falls. It doesn’t use less power than a normal inverter AC: Haier lists 0.52 to 1.85 kW of cooling input for both its 1.5-ton hybrid and its grid-only model. As of October 2026 Haier’s hybrids cost Rs 11,000 to Rs 16,000 more. Buy one if you have no solar system; if you do, a normal inverter AC does the same job.

Haier 1.5-ton, power input while cooling

0.52-1.85 kW for both

Solar Hybrid-III (DC 80V-380V solar input) and HSU-20HFTEX T3 Plus (grid only), from Haier Pakistan's spec sheets, 18 Oct 2026.

What is a solar AC, and how does it work?

Haier says it introduced Pakistan’s first solar hybrid AC in August 2023 (JARN). Haier is the only maker whose solar AC spec sheets we could find, so we use its models as the worked example. That is not a recommendation of Haier over other brands, and other brands may work differently.

According to Haier’s product pages:

  • The panels connect straight to the AC, with no separate solar inverter or battery. The AC accepts DC 80V to 380V from the panels, plus normal 220V or 230V mains.
  • In the day it runs from the panels. When sunlight falls or at night, it switches to grid power automatically.
  • “Solar and Grid Auto Balance” mixes solar and grid power when the panels can’t cover the load, so cooling doesn’t stop.

Haier’s pages don’t say whether the AC keeps running on panels alone during load-shedding. Ask the dealer to show you this before you buy.

Solar AC vs inverter AC: what’s the difference?

One brand’s example: Haier’s spec sheets for two of its 1.5-ton models, as of 18 Oct 2026:

Solar Hybrid-III (OW)-T3 HSU-20HFTEX T3 Plus
Type DC inverter, solar hybrid DC inverter, grid only
Cooling capacity 21,000 BTU 22,000 BTU
Power input, cooling 0.52-1.85 kW 0.52-1.85 kW
Running current 2.3-8.1 A 2.3-8.1 A
Power supply 220V AC, plus DC 80V-380V from panels 230V AC only
Warranty Compressor 10 years, parts 5 years Compressor 10 years, parts 5 years

The two use the same power. The hybrid’s only extra is the DC input for panels. Any saving comes from the sunlight, not from a more efficient AC.

All split ACs, inverter or not, must carry NEECA’s star-rating energy label under its 2023 regulations (S.R.O. 413(I)/2024), CLASP reports. Compare the stars on the box when choosing between models.

What is the solar AC price in Pakistan?

We found shop listings with full specs only for Haier’s solar hybrids, so the table compares Haier models only. Listed prices on 18 Oct 2026, without panels:

Model Price Shop
Haier Solar Hybrid-III, 1.5 ton Rs 180,000 Bismillah Electronics
Haier Solar Hybrid-III, 1.5 ton Rs 182,000 (out of stock) Japan Electronics
Haier Solar Hybrid-IV, 2 ton Rs 212,000 Jalal Electronics
Haier HSU-24HFCD, 2 ton, grid only Rs 196,000 Jalal Electronics
Haier HSU-20HFTEX T3 Plus, 1.5 ton, grid only Rs 169,000 Jalal Electronics

At the same shop, the 2-ton hybrid costs Rs 16,000 more than a 2-ton grid-only Haier. For 1.5 ton, the gap is about Rs 11,000, comparing two shops. Normal 1.5-ton inverter ACs at Bismillah ranged from Rs 118,000 to Rs 215,000.

How many solar panels do I need for a 1.5 ton AC?

Using Haier’s figures as the example, a 1.5-ton inverter AC draws up to 1.85 kW when it works hardest. By our calculation:

  • Four 585 W panels give 2.34 kW, enough to cover that peak in strong sun. At Rs 24,570 a panel (Longi Hi-MO 7, September 2026), four cost about Rs 98,000, before the mounting structure and wiring.
  • In Lahore, each kW of panels makes about 4 units a day on average over the year (Global Solar Atlas), so 2.34 kW gives about 9.4 units a day.
  • Over 8 hours, the AC uses between 4.2 and 14.8 units, depending on how hard it works. Our guide to inverter AC electricity consumption turns this into a monthly bill.

The panels must be wired so their voltage stays inside the AC’s 80V to 380V input. That depends on the panel model, so ask the installer to check it.

Which should I buy: a solar AC or an inverter AC on solar panels?

Solar AC or inverter AC?
  1. Do you already have rooftop solar? On-grid or hybrid system with its own inverter
  2. Yes Buy a normal inverter AC; your system already powers it in the day
  3. No, and you only want to run one AC A hybrid AC with about 4 panels skips the solar inverter
  4. No, and you want to cut the whole bill Size a rooftop system for the house instead

A hybrid AC makes sense when you want solar for one AC and nothing else. It skips the solar inverter, and 3 to 5 kW inverters cost Rs 120,000 to Rs 300,000 in Karachi’s market (ARY News, July 2026). Since 9 February 2026, new net billing connections get only about Rs 11 for each exported unit, against about Rs 47 for units bought from the grid at the top slab, Profit worked out. Panels that feed an AC directly save the full rate you pay.

A normal inverter AC makes sense when you already have rooftop solar, or plan to. The system powers the AC and everything else in the house, and spare units can be exported. Haier’s pages describe no way for a hybrid AC to send spare solar to other appliances or the grid, so on a mild day its panels may sit partly idle.

Either way, solar alone gives no cooling in a night-time power cut. A grid-tied inverter switches itself off within about 2 seconds of a blackout, even in full sun; backup needs batteries with a hybrid inverter.

To see what your bill would be without solar, check the electricity unit price for your slab: IESCO charges Rs 33.10 a unit in the unprotected 201-300 slab (February 2026 tariff).

Questions people ask

What is a solar AC?

In Pakistan it usually means a hybrid DC inverter AC that takes solar panels directly (Haier's models accept DC 80V to 380V) and switches to grid power when sunlight falls or at night. Haier says it needs no separate solar inverter or battery.

What is the solar AC price in Pakistan?

We found manufacturer specs only for Haier's solar ACs. On 18 Oct 2026, Haier's 1.5-ton Solar Hybrid-III was listed at Rs 180,000 to Rs 182,000 and the 2-ton Solar Hybrid-IV at Rs 212,000, without panels. One shop's normal 1.5-ton inverter ACs ranged from Rs 118,000 to Rs 215,000.

Does a solar AC use less electricity than an inverter AC?

Not by itself. Haier lists the same 0.52 to 1.85 kW cooling input for its 1.5-ton Solar Hybrid-III and its grid-only HSU-20HFTEX. The saving comes from the panels, which a normal inverter AC also gets on a rooftop solar system.

How many solar panels do I need for a 1.5 ton AC?

By our calculation, four 585 W panels (2.34 kW) cover a 1.5-ton inverter AC's 1.85 kW peak in strong sun. Ask the installer to check that the string voltage stays inside the AC's 80V to 380V input.
