Kalam, Malam Jabba and Mahodand in Swat, or Naran, Saiful Muluk and Babusar in Kaghan? Roads, seasons, family tips and advisories, as of October 2026.
AI Summary
For a summer family trip both valleys work, but they differ on season and risk. Naran is the base for Lake Saiful Muluk and Babusar Pass, and its road was shut by snow from November 2025 until late spring 2026. Kalam in Swat hosted a snow festival in February 2026, but the N-95 road to Kalam still had flood damage at seven places in June 2026. As of 16 October 2026 the UK advises against all travel to Swat.
For a summer family trip, both work, but pick by month. Naran (Kaghan valley) is open only from about late May until the first snow: its road was shut from November 2025 until spring 2026. Kalam in Swat hosted a snow festival in February 2026, but the road to Kalam still had flood damage at 7 places in June 2026, and the UK advises against all travel to Swat (as of 16 October 2026).
Both valleys are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and both had floods and road closures in summer 2026. Check the road on the day you leave, whichever you pick.

The KPCTA marks Kalam, Malam Jabba and Lake Saiful Muluk as suitable for families. Both valleys are busy in peak season: on 25 June 2026 KPCTA counted 109,292 domestic tourists in Naran-Kaghan and 57,704 in Swat valley, in a single day.
Kalam is the main town of upper Swat, about 40 km beyond Bahrain. Its original inhabitants are Kohistani. From Kalam, roads lead to the Ushu (2,286 m), Utror (2,225 m) and Gabral (2,286 m) valleys, according to KPCTA.
Mahodand Lake is in the Ushu valley, about 23 km beyond Matiltan. It is about 2 km long, at roughly 9,400 ft, and offers boating. From Matiltan (3,000 m) you can see Falak Sar peak (5,957 m).
Malam Jabba is a hill resort about 44 km from Mingora. KPCTA says its ski resort and a new chairlift were opened in 2016, after the provincial tourism corporation awarded the restoration in September 2015. We couldn’t confirm whether the chairlift is running or what it costs in 2026.
If your family fishes, trout fishing in Kalam’s rivers and lakes needs a permit from the Fisheries Department.
Naran is the main tourist centre of the 160 km long Kaghan valley, on the Kunhar River. In summer it has more than 100 hotels of different kinds, according to KPCTA, which lists these day trips from Naran:
Walking up to Saiful Muluk takes about three hours and means climbing about 3,000 ft. KPCTA says it is only for people fit enough.
We found no official road distance or drive time from Islamabad to Kalam or to Naran. Figures on travel blogs vary, so we have left them out. Here is what is sourced.
To Swat, the 81 km, four-lane Swat Expressway runs from the Colonel Sher Khan interchange through Swabi and Mardan to Chakdara. In June 2019, tourists told Dawn it cut the Islamabad to Swat trip by about two hours. From Chakdara, the N-95 runs 133 km to Kalam.
To Naran, you take the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad (MNJ) road through Balakot. Naran is 85 km from Balakot, according to KPCTA.
Naran’s hotels open in late May, when the snow melts and the road becomes passable, according to KPCTA. In winter most of its people move down to Balakot and Mansehra.
In the 2025-26 winter, traffic on the MNJ road was suspended in November 2025 after the first snowfall. On 20 April 2026 the National Highway Authority (NHA) was still cutting through the Gorian glacier, and roads to Lake Saiful Muluk were closed by snow and landslides. Babusar Pass reopened to tourists on 25 May 2026 (23 May in 2025).
Babusar Top had the season’s first snow on 5 September 2026, though traffic kept moving that day. Dawn says the Babusar road typically closes from November to June. If you want Naran in October, check the road with the Mansehra district administration first.
We found no official season dates for Kalam. What we can say is that it was reachable in deep winter: a three-day snow festival in Kalam, organised to promote winter tourism, ended on 9 February 2026, with a jeep rally and snow kabaddi.
That is the main seasonal difference: Naran shuts in winter, while Kalam has hosted winter events. We found no official notice on whether the Kalam road is kept open after snow. For a month-by-month view across the north, see our guide to the best time to visit northern Pakistan.
The incidents we found in both valleys in 2025 and 2026 were fast rivers and flash floods. Here is what happened, with dates.
Swat River, June 2025. On 27 June 2025, after two days of rain, the Swat River flooded a picnic spot by the Mingora bypass where tourists were having breakfast on the bank. The provincial disaster authority (PDMA) put the death toll at 10, and rescue officials said at least 13 drowned. The families were from Sialkot and Mardan.
Section 144, a legal order banning swimming and boating in rivers, had been in force across Malakand division since 2 June 2025. A preliminary inquiry by the Malakand commissioner said tourists still reached the river, construction work had changed its course, and enforcement was weak.
Bahrain to Kalam, September 2026. A flash flood at Mankiyal cut the Bahrain to Kalam road on 5 September 2026. Authorities told people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and streams.
Saiful Muluk, July and August 2026. A cloudburst flood washed away part of the Naran to Saiful Muluk road, and tourists stranded in about 200 jeeps were rescued on 30 July 2026. The Mansehra administration banned travel to the lake on 31 July, at the request of the NDMA and PDMA.
Babusar Road, July 2025. A cloudburst on the Gilgit-Baltistan side blocked 7 to 8 km of road with 14 to 15 major blockages, and the NDMA reported three dead. In May 2026 authorities advised Babusar travellers to go in daylight, check the weather and use a mechanically fit vehicle.
Keep children back from the water. In June 2026 police were posted along the Kunhar River to keep tourists away from its fast current, and the Swat inquiry shows the same danger there. For a wider view, see is Pakistan safe to visit.

As of 16 October 2026, the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Swat district, along with Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Buner. It advises against all but essential travel to Malakand, Mardan and Swabi, and the Swat Expressway runs through Swabi and Mardan.
Kaghan, Naran and Babusar are not named on the FCDO list. The FCDO does advise against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas via Battagram, Besham City, Dasu and Sazin. That is a different route from the MNJ road through Naran and over Babusar.
The FCDO warns that travelling against its advice can invalidate your travel insurance. Check your policy before you book; our guide to travel insurance in Pakistan explains what to ask. We couldn’t open the US State Department’s Pakistan advisory to check it.
Very busy on public holidays. Between 25 and 27 June 2026, Kaghan’s hotels ran at full capacity, the MNJ road was heavily congested, and Lake Saiful Muluk and Babusar Top had record visitor numbers. Book a room before you leave and expect slow traffic on the MNJ road.
Swat drew about half Naran’s numbers on 25 June 2026: 57,704 visitors against 109,292, by KPCTA’s count. If crowds are your main worry, that gap is worth weighing.

From June to September both work. Naran has the bigger day trips (Lake Saiful Muluk, Lulusar, Babusar Top), while Kalam in Swat was reachable in winter too: it hosted a snow festival in February 2026.
About 44 km, according to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA). Kalam is about 40 km beyond Bahrain, further up the valley.
KPCTA says Mahodand is about 23 km beyond Matiltan, the village above Kalam. Travel blogs give 35 to 40 km from Kalam town, but we couldn't confirm that.
Usually from late May until the first snow. The Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad road was closed from November 2025 until spring 2026, and Babusar Pass reopened to tourists on 25 May 2026. Check the Mansehra district administration before you set off.
As of 16 October 2026 the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Swat district, which may affect your travel insurance. Kaghan and Naran are not on its list.
