The table doesn’t score the cities. It shows what each offers, from the official tourism pages, so you can match it to your trip.
Lahore Fort is the place to start. UNESCO inscribed it as World Heritage in 1981, and its highlights include the Sheesh Mahal. As of October 2026 it opens at 8am and closes half an hour before sunset.

Students pay Rs 30. Prices from the Punjab Walled Cities & Heritage Areas Authority's fort website.
The fort is run by the Punjab Walled Cities & Heritage Areas Authority, which used to be called the Walled City of Lahore Authority. It also manages Shalimar Gardens, the Mughal garden linked to Emperor Shah Jahan, the Shahdara Complex, Shahi Hammam, Chowk Wazir Khan and Food Street.
If you are short on time, a guided tour is the easiest way to see the old city. As of October 2026 the authority lists tours such as:
The tour page gives no prices or timings. Call the authority on +92 42 99204238 or +92 42 99204237 to book. We couldn’t find official ticket prices for Shalimar Gardens, Badshahi Mosque or Wazir Khan Mosque, so check at the gate.
Islamabad is a planned capital. The CDA says it was built from 1960 to replace Karachi as the capital, a role it has held since 1963. Most of what visitors come for is outdoors, at the foot of the Margalla Hills.
Margalla Hills trails. The CDA describes these numbered trails:
| Trail | Starts | What the CDA says |
|---|---|---|
| Trail 2 | Near Islamabad Zoo | 1 to 1.5 hours to Daman-e-Koh viewpoint |
| Trail 3 | Margalla Road, F-6 | Oldest and best known; viewpoint in 30 to 50 minutes |
| Trail 5 | Margalla Road, F-5 | Easier climb |
| Trail 6 | Behind Faisal Mosque, E-7 | Start point only |
The Margalla Hills National Park is home to leopards, deer and foxes, according to the CDA. Stay on the marked trails.
In and around the city, the CDA lists:
In September 2026 the CDA said it plans electric double-decker sightseeing buses linking Lake View Park, Shakarparian, Pakistan Monument, Faisal Mosque, Daman-e-Koh and D-Chowk. Fares and a launch date had not been announced.
We found no official Rawalpindi sights list, so this guide covers Islamabad only.
Karachi’s main sights, from the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation’s own pages:
We found no official ticket prices or opening hours for these sites, and no official road distance from Karachi to Chaukhandi or Makli. Ask your hotel or a licensed tour operator before you set off.
As of 16 October 2026, none of the three cities is on the UK FCDO’s list of places to avoid. The FCDO does say attacks have taken place in Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore. Here is what it says about each, so you can judge for yourself.
Karachi. The FCDO reports a recent increase in armed robbery, and says criminal and political violence is common, including carjacking, robbery, kidnap and murder. It sees major hotels and the financial district as more stable. It asks visitors to be especially careful in Lyari, Malir, Quaidabad, Orangi Town, Baldia Town, New Karachi Town, Surjani Town and Gulistan-e-Jauhar. In October 2024 a suicide attack near Jinnah International Airport killed 4 people.
Lahore. The FCDO notes a widespread police presence but recent terrorist attacks on public places and security forces. It advises avoiding religious gatherings, public events and large crowds.
Islamabad. Police and security agencies have a significant presence. The FCDO advises caution in outer sectors such as I-8 to I-11, and avoiding protests, which have centred on Lal Masjid, Aabpara Market in G-6 and the Islamabad Press Club. On 6 February 2026 a suicide bombing at an imambargah in Islamabad killed at least 36 people.

Smog is common in Lahore, especially in winter. PDMA Punjab said in October 2025 that it expected smog to get worse from November to mid-December. Readings from Dawn give a sense of the levels:
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| 8 to 17 Nov 2024 | Punjab closed parks, zoos, monuments and museums in Lahore and 17 other districts |
| 26 Oct 2025 | Citywide AQI 412 |
| January 2026 | AQI 452 |
| 2 Oct 2026 | AQI 167 in the morning, 149 by 2pm |
A closure like the one in 2024 could shut Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens to visitors, so plan a Lahore trip for outside the smog months if you can. Sources differ on timing: the Punjab chief minister described a “smog shutdown” in September and October, while PDMA puts the peak in November to mid-December. We follow PDMA. We found no official climate data comparing the three cities.
If you want a winter trip instead, see our guide to places to visit in winter.
Pick Lahore if history is the point of the trip: the fort, Shalimar Gardens and the Walled City tours are all run by one authority, with ticket prices published for the fort. Pick Islamabad if you want walks and open space, or if you plan to go on to the hills: see Hunza or Skardu, Murree in winter and the best time to visit northern Pakistan.
For foreign visitors, sort out your Pakistan visa and using foreign cards at Pakistani ATMs before you land, and check travel insurance covers the places you plan to go.

PDMA Punjab expected smog to peak from November to mid-December in 2025. In November 2024 Punjab closed parks, monuments and museums in Lahore for ten days because of it.
Usually, but they close at short notice. The Islamabad administration shut several trails in August 2025 for heavy rain and again in April 2026, so check local news on the day.
