1 marla is how many square feet?

There are three figures in use, and the law names two of them.

Marla standard 1 marla In sq yards In sq metres 1 kanal (20 marla) Where it applies
225 sq ft 225 sq ft 25 20.90 4,500 sq ft Lahore district: Punjab rules, LDA, DHA Lahore
272 sq ft 272 sq ft 30.22 25.27 5,440 sq ft Other Punjab districts: Punjab rules, LDA
272.25 sq ft 272.25 sq ft 30.25 25.29 5,445 sq ft Traditional revenue marla (secondary source)

The 225 and 272 figures are written into law. The Punjab Development Authorities Private Housing Schemes Rules 2021, published in the Punjab Gazette on 7 December 2021, define a marla as “two hundred twenty-five square feet in Lahore district and two hundred seventy two square feet in other districts”. The 2010 Punjab housing scheme rules use almost the same words. LDA’s Building and Zoning Regulations 2019 repeat both figures.

DHA Lahore’s regulations define a marla as 25 square yards or 225 sq ft, and a kanal as 20 marla, 500 square yards or 4,500 sq ft.

The 272.25 figure is the marla standardised in British times: 9 square karams of 30.25 sq ft each. We took it from Wikipedia because we couldn’t open the Punjab revenue manuals. It differs from the 272 in the rules by a quarter of a square foot a marla, or 5 sq ft a kanal.

How many square feet is 5 marla or 10 marla in Lahore?

By definition, 5 marla is 1,125 sq ft and 10 marla is 2,250 sq ft. A plot’s actual length and width don’t always multiply out to that. DHA Lahore’s regulations set these standard residential plot sizes:

DHA Lahore plot Standard size Area 225 sq ft x marla
5 marla 25 x 45 ft 1,125 sq ft 1,125
7 marla 30 x 52.5 ft 1,575 sq ft 1,575
8 marla 30 x 60 ft 1,800 sq ft 1,800
10 marla 35 x 64 ft or 35 x 65 ft 2,240 or 2,275 sq ft 2,250
1 kanal 50 x 90 ft 4,500 sq ft 4,500
2 kanal 100 x 90 ft or 75 x 120 ft 9,000 sq ft 9,000

Every size matches exactly except 10 marla, which is 10 sq ft short or 25 sq ft over. DHA’s regulations also allow non-standard plots where the layout was adjusted or re-planned. So for any plot, multiply its length by its width rather than relying on the label.

Is a marla 225 or 272 square feet outside Lahore?

Under the Punjab rules, 272 sq ft. A 5 marla plot in a housing scheme in Faisalabad, Multan or Gujranwala is then 1,360 sq ft.

But not every society follows that. DHA Gujranwala’s summary of its 2022 bye-laws lists a 5 marla plot as 25 x 45 ft and a 6 marla plot as 27 x 50 ft. That’s 1,125 and 1,350 sq ft, which works out to 225 sq ft a marla, even though Gujranwala is outside Lahore district. The summary doesn’t define the marla itself; the 225 is our calculation from its plot sizes.

So when a plot is advertised in marla outside Lahore, ask which marla it means, or ask for the plot’s dimensions.

  3. For kanal, multiply by 20 first. 1 kanal is 20 marla, so 2 kanal in Lahore is 40 x 225 = 9,000 sq ft.
  4. Convert to other units if you need them. Divide square feet by 9 for square yards. Multiply by 0.0929 for square metres.
