Fundamentals and safe use
What you should never paste into a chatbot
A simple rule for keeping your identity, money and employer's secrets out of AI tools.
Treat a chatbot like a stranger's notepad
What you type goes to a company's servers. What happens to it afterwards depends on the tool, the plan and your settings, and those rules change. Until you have checked, assume anything you paste could be seen or kept.
Never paste these
Your CNIC number, passport number or any photo of them.
Passwords, PINs and one-time codes (OTPs). A real bank or service never needs them from you in a chat.
Bank account, IBAN or card details.
Your employer's or client's confidential files, price lists or customer lists, unless your workplace has approved the tool.
Other people's private details: addresses, phone numbers, medical or legal papers.
Try it
Clean a draft before you paste it
Rewrite this email to sound more polite: "Hi [NAME], your order [ORDER NO.] is delayed. Please pay the balance of [AMOUNT] to our account."
- Take a real email you need to improve.
- Replace names, numbers, amounts and account details with placeholders like [NAME] and [AMOUNT].
- Paste the cleaned version, then put the real details back yourself.
What to look for: You get the same help with the wording, and nothing private ever left your device.
Check yourself
Someone on WhatsApp says they are from "the AI company" and asks for your OTP to verify your account. What is this?
Show the answer
A scam. No genuine service needs your OTP over chat. Do not share it, and report the number.
