## Summary

For the water lines inside a house, PPR (PPRC) pipe suits both hot and cold water, and its joints are fused by heat. Use PN20 for hot lines; in IIL's table it holds 10.2 bar at 70 C for 50 years against 8.1 bar for PN16. uPVC suits cold water, drainage and sewerage and is limited to 60 C. GI pipe loses its zinc coating and rusts from the inside. PPR, uPVC and PE water pipes are on PSQCA's compulsory list. Makers publish no price lists we could read.

## Key facts

- Hot water lines: PPR, PN20
- Cold water lines: PPR PN16 or uPVC pressure pipe
- Mark to look for: PSQCA mark and the Pakistan Standard
- Plumber, Lahore (PBS, Sep 2026): Rs 2,037 a day

The best water pipe in Pakistan for the supply lines inside a house is **PPR (also sold as PPRC)**, joined by heat fusion, so each joint becomes one piece. Use **PN20** for hot water and PN16 or uPVC for cold. Use uPVC for drainage and sewerage. Galvanized iron (GI) is the old choice: it rusts from the inside once its zinc coating wears off. As of 21 October 2026, PPR, uPVC pressure and PE water pipes are on PSQCA's compulsory list, so look for the mark.

Below: which pipe goes where, what PN16 and PN20 mean, what to check on the pipe, and why we don't print brand prices.

## Which is the best water pipe in Pakistan for each job?

| Job | Pipe | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water from the geyser | PPR, PN20 | Rated for hot water; PN20 keeps more pressure at 70 C |
| Cold water inside the house | PPR PN16, or uPVC pressure pipe | Both are standardised for drinking water; uPVC is limited to 60 C |
| Drainage, sewerage, rainwater | uPVC | IIL lists sewerage and rain drainage among uPVC uses |
| Gas line | GI, or PE made for gas | IIL lists natural gas among GI uses; buried PE gas pipe has its own standard (PS 3452) |

SNGPL wants the gas pipe inside your house laid by an SNGPL-enlisted contractor; see [electricity and gas connection for a new house](/property/guides/new-electricity-gas-connection/).

## What is PPR pipe?

PPR is polypropylene random copolymer. The pipe and fitting are heated to about 260 C with a welding tool and pushed together, so each joint becomes one piece. IIL, which makes PPR, uPVC and GI pipe, lists hot and cold water in houses and hot water for boilers among its PPR uses.

PPR expands when it gets hot, so it needs clamps. IIL's brochure spaces clamps 85 cm apart on a 20 mm cold line and 50 cm apart on a hot one with a 70 C difference, and says the design must allow for the pipe getting longer.

## PN16 vs PN20: which do I need?

PN is the pressure class. A higher PN means a thicker wall: in IIL's range, PN16 has a standard dimension ratio (SDR) of 7.4 and PN20 an SDR of 6. Heat lowers what a pipe can safely hold, which is why hot lines need the higher class.

| Water temperature, 50 years of use | PN16 | PN20 |
|---|---|---|
| 30 C | 20.7 bar | 26.1 bar |
| 50 C | 14.7 bar | 18.5 bar |
| 70 C | 8.1 bar | 10.2 bar |

Allowable operating pressure, from IIL's PPRC brochure (undated, read 21 Oct 2026). At 95 C the table gives only 5 years: 4.9 bar for PN16 and 6.2 bar for PN20. IIL marks PN10 and PN25 as non-standard items.

## Is uPVC pipe good for water supply?

For cold water, yes. PSQCA's standard for uPVC pressure pipe is written for **cold** drinking water (PS 3051). PVC-U pressure pipe is rated to 60 C at most, a European supplier's listing to ISO 1452 says, so keep it away from geyser lines. It is joined with solvent cement, not by heat.

uPVC is also the usual pipe for drainage: IIL lists plumbing, sewerage, rain drainage and irrigation among its uses, in sizes from 2 to 8 inches.

## Is GI pipe still a good choice?

Not for water lines in a new house. GI pipe is steel coated with zinc: IIL dips it in molten zinc after forming, and makes it in light, medium and heavy grades to BS EN 10255 and ASTM A53. The zinc wears away over the years from minerals in the water, and the pipe then corrodes from the inside, a US water utility explains. The rust narrows the pipe, lowers the pressure, can turn the water brown and in the end leaks.

GI isn't on PSQCA's compulsory list (checked 21 Oct 2026), so there is no compulsory Pakistani mark to look for.

## What should I check on the pipe?

PSQCA's compulsory list covers these water and gas pipes, so each must meet the named Pakistan Standard (PS):

| Pipe | Pakistan Standard |
|---|---|
| PVC pressure pipe for cold drinking water | PS 3051 |
| PVC pressure-rated pipe, SDR series | PS 5347-2015 |
| Polypropylene (PP) pipe | PS 4533-1999, dimensions PS 4534-1999 and PS 4279-2001 |
| PE pipe for water supply | PS 3580-2014 |
| Buried PE pipe for gas | PS 3452-2014 |

**Before you buy:** 1. Check the PSQCA mark and the PS number printed along the pipe.
2. Check the PN class on PPR (PN20 for hot lines) and the size in mm.
3. Ask the dealer for the maker's pressure table, like the one above.

## What is the PPR pipe price in Pakistan today?

We don't print one. No maker publishes a dated price list we could read on 21 October 2026: IIL's and Adamjee's pages show no prices, and Master's, Dadex's and Popular's websites didn't open for us. Retail blogs post per-metre ranges, but they mix per-metre and per-length prices, so we left them out.

Compare like with like: the same size, PN class and maker from two dealers. Labour is easier to check. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) recorded a plumber's daily wage in September 2026 at:

| City | Plumber per day |
|---|---|
| Lahore | Rs 2,037 |
| Karachi | Rs 2,359 |
| Islamabad | Rs 2,238 |
| Rawalpindi | Rs 2,232 |
| Faisalabad | Rs 1,594 |
| Multan | Rs 1,811 |
| Peshawar | Rs 2,500 |
| Quetta | Rs 1,498 |
| Hyderabad | Rs 2,183 |

## Questions people ask

### Which water pipe is best for a house in Pakistan?

PPR (PPRC) for the hot and cold supply lines inside the house, PN20 for hot water. uPVC for drainage and sewerage. GI is the older choice and rusts from the inside once its zinc coating wears off.

### Should I use PN16 or PN20 PPR pipe?

PN20 for hot water. In IIL's pressure table, at 70 C over 50 years, PN20 holds 10.2 bar and PN16 8.1 bar. PN16 is enough for cold lines.

### What is the PPR pipe price in Pakistan today?

No maker publishes a price list we could read as of 21 October 2026, so we don't print one. Ask two dealers to quote the same size, PN class and brand.

### Is GI pipe better than PVC or PPR pipe?

Not for water lines in a new house. Galvanized pipe loses its zinc coating over the years and corrodes from the inside, which lowers water pressure and can turn the water brown.

### Which is the best water pipe company in Pakistan?

We don't rank brands: none publishes test results we could compare. Buy a pipe that carries the PSQCA mark and the Pakistan Standard number for its type, from a maker that gives its pressure table.
