## Summary

An IBAN in Pakistan is your existing bank account number in a 24-character international format: PK, two check digits, a four-letter bank code taken from the bank's SWIFT code, and a 16-digit account number. State Bank rules had banks issue IBANs by December 2012 and use them for payments by June 2013. You can find yours on your bank statement or cheque book, in some banking apps, through your bank's online IBAN generator, or at a branch.

## Key facts

- Length: 24 characters
- Starts with: PK + 2 check digits
- Bank code: 4 letters, e.g. MUCB for MCB
- Account part: 16 digits, zero-padded

An IBAN number (International Bank Account Number) is your existing bank account number written in a standard format that banks everywhere can check. In Pakistan it is always **24 characters: PK, 2 check digits, a 4-letter bank code and a 16-digit account number**, for example PK24 MUCB 0646 6099 7100 0177 at MCB. You can find yours on your bank statement, in some banking apps, with your bank's online IBAN generator, or at a branch. It isn't a new account: your account number stays the same.

## What is the IBAN number format in Pakistan?

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) set the format in its 2012 IBAN guidelines. Every Pakistani IBAN has four parts:

| Part | Length | Example (MCB) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country code | 2 letters | PK | The account is held in Pakistan |
| Check digits | 2 digits | 24 | Lets a bank catch a mistyped IBAN |
| Bank code | 4 letters | MUCB | First four letters of the bank's SWIFT code (banks without one use a code from SBP's PRISM system or one SBP assigns) |
| Account number | 16 digits | 0646609971000177 | Your account number, padded with zeros |

If your account number is shorter than 16 digits, zeros are added on the left. SBP's example: account 2112345607 becomes 0000002112345607. Banks print the IBAN in groups of four so it's easier to read.

Some banks fit the branch into the 16 digits. At Meezan Bank, the account part is 00, then your 4-digit branch code, then your 10-digit account number.

Bank codes, as shown by SBP and the banks:

| Bank | Code in the IBAN |
|---|---|
| MCB Bank | MUCB |
| HBL (Habib Bank) | HABB |
| Meezan Bank | MEZN |
| UBL | UNIL |
| Allied Bank | ABPA |
| Bank Alfalah | ALFH |
| Standard Chartered | SCBL |
| U Microfinance Bank | UMBL |

SBP told banks to generate IBANs for all customers by December 2012 and to use them for domestic and international payments by June 2013. Standard Chartered says use started on 1 July 2013, while UBL's FAQ gives January 2014 for its customers.

## Is the IBAN number the same as the account number?

No, but your account number is inside it. Standard Chartered and Meezan both say the IBAN isn't a new account number and your existing number stays. The IBAN just adds PK, the check digits and the bank code in front.

Each account has its own IBAN, so two accounts mean two IBANs. A card number is not an IBAN: Standard Chartered notes that IBANs identify bank accounts, not credit cards.

## How do I find my IBAN number?

1. **Look at your bank statement.** SBP asked banks to print the IBAN on account statements. Meezan prints it on the statements it sends every six months, and U Bank also prints it on the cheque book.
2. **Check your bank's app.** In MCB Live, for example, "Manage Raast ID" shows your accounts with their IBANs.
3. **Use your bank's IBAN generator.** Enter your account number (and branch, where asked) on the bank's own website. The result is only as right as the details you type.
4. **Ask the bank.** Your branch or helpline can tell you. UBL's contact centre is 021-111-825-888.

## How to find your IBAN number at each bank

| Bank or app | Where to find your IBAN |
|---|---|
| Meezan Bank | IBAN generator on meezanbank.com (needs your branch and account number); half-yearly statements |
| UBL | Bank statement; branch; UBL contact centre 021-111-825-888 |
| MCB Bank | MCB Live, under "Manage Raast ID" |
| HBL | HBL's website links an IBAN generator under Remittance; it blocked us, so we couldn't check it |
| Allied Bank | Online IBAN generator on abl.com |
| Bank Alfalah | IBAN calculator: enter the first 4 digits of your 14-digit account number, then the other 10 |
| Standard Chartered | IBAN calculator and validator on sc.com/pk |
| U Microfinance Bank | Cheque book and account statements; branch or helpline |
| NayaPay | In the app, under Add Money |
| SadaPay | In the app, under Load money |

**What we couldn't check:** SBP's website blocked us, so we read its 2012 IBAN guidelines through an Internet Archive copy. Bank Alfalah's site also blocked us; its calculator details come from a July 2025 archived copy. We found no official JazzCash or easypaisa page on where their apps show the IBAN, so they aren't in the table.

## How can I check an IBAN is correct?

The two check digits make a mistyped IBAN fail a simple maths test (modulus 97), and SBP's guidelines say the paying bank should validate the IBAN before processing the payment. Meezan and Standard Chartered both have online IBAN validators. A pass only means the IBAN is well formed. SBP's guidelines say the check doesn't prove that the account exists, so check the account title your app shows before you confirm. HBL's Raast steps, for example, ask you to check the recipient's account title.

## What do I need an IBAN number for?

- **Money from abroad.** Wise needs the receiver's full name and 24-character IBAN to send rupees to Pakistan. See [Wise in Pakistan](/money/guides/wise-in-pakistan/) and [sending money to Pakistan](/money/guides/send-money-to-pakistan/).
- **Freelance payouts.** To withdraw from Payoneer to NayaPay, you add NayaPay's 24-digit IBAN as a rupee bank account. See [Payoneer in Pakistan](/money/guides/payoneer-in-pakistan/).
- **Raast transfers.** You can send money to someone's IBAN or Raast ID through your bank's app, internet banking, branch or USSD. See [Raast](/money/guides/raast/).
- **Import and export.** Pakistan Single Window asks for a valid IBAN to link your bank. See [PSW registration](/business/guides/psw-registration/).
- **Refunds.** Hajj 2027 application refunds go to the IBAN the applicant gave. See [Hajj 2027](/travel/guides/hajj-2027/).

## Questions people ask

### How many digits is an IBAN number in Pakistan?

24 characters: the letters PK, 2 check digits, a 4-letter bank code and a 16-digit account number. Banks print it in groups of four, such as PK24 MUCB 0646 6099 7100 0177.

### Is the IBAN number the same as my account number?

No, but it contains it. The IBAN is your existing account number, padded with zeros to 16 digits and preceded by PK, two check digits and your bank's code. Your account number doesn't change.

### How do I find my IBAN number from my account number?

Use your bank's online IBAN generator: Meezan, Allied Bank, Bank Alfalah and Standard Chartered have one. You can also read it from your bank statement, or ask your branch or helpline.

### What is the IBAN for NayaPay?

NayaPay shows your 24-digit IBAN under Add Money in the app. SadaPay shows its IBAN under Load money.

### Do I need a separate IBAN for each account?

Yes. UBL's FAQ says each bank account has its own IBAN, so if you have several accounts you have several IBANs.
