## What documents are needed for a business bank account?

The documents depend on the type of business. This list is from NBP's published account-opening requirements; HBL's and Bank AL Habib's lists are similar, with a few additions.

| Business type | Documents |
|---|---|
| Sole proprietor | Your CNIC, plus **any one** of: registration certificate, NTN or sales tax certificate, trade body membership, a declaration of sole proprietorship on letterhead, or an account request on letterhead |
| Partnership | CNICs of all partners and signatories, plus **all** of: attested partnership deed signed by all partners, Registrar of Firms certificate (or a note that the firm is unregistered), and an authority letter signed by all partners |
| Limited liability partnership (LLP) | Partners' CNICs, the LLP deed, LLP Form III or Form V, and an authority letter signed by all partners |
| Company | CNICs of all directors and signatories, plus a board resolution naming who runs the account, memorandum and articles of association, Form A or B, and Form II or Form 29 |

Banks add their own items. HBL lists a request letter and NTN copy for sole proprietors. Bank AL Habib asks for a proprietary rubber stamp and an NTN copy attested by a notary public, and for companies, the CNICs of shareholders holding more than 10%.

If you haven't registered your business yet, see [how to register a sole proprietorship](/business/guides/how-to-register-sole-proprietorship/), [partnership firm registration](/business/guides/partnership-firm-registration-punjab/) or [how to register a company](/business/guides/how-to-register-a-company-in-pakistan/). To pick a structure first, see [business structures in Pakistan](/business/guides/business-structures-pakistan/).

## Is NTN required to open a business account?

Not under the State Bank's rules. In November 2016, SBP told banks that a missing NTN (National Tax Number) should not be a reason to refuse banking services; for sole proprietors, banks should open the account and collect the NTN later, as The News reported. NBP's list also treats an NTN as just one of several accepted proofs.

**Some banks still list an NTN:** HBL and Bank AL Habib both list an NTN copy for sole proprietors on their account pages. If you have one, take it. If you don't, ask the bank to accept another proof from the list above, or get an NTN first; see [how to get an NTN](/business/guides/how-to-get-ntn/).

## What is the minimum balance for a business current account?

Each bank sets its own rule, and the penalty for missing it differs.

- **HBL Freedom:** keep at least Rs 25,000. If the balance drops below Rs 25,000 **even for a day**, HBL charges Rs 50 on every debit you made that month, added up at month end.
- **MCB Business Account:** a Rs 50,000 minimum monthly balance. **MCB Smart Business** has no minimum, but free services need an average above Rs 5,000.
- **Bank Alfalah Kamyab Karobar:** a Rs 50,000 monthly average. Miss it and Bank Alfalah charges Rs 43 a month (July to December 2026 schedule). Bank Alfalah's site blocked us, so its free services come from an archived May 2026 copy of the product page.
- **Bank AL Habib Current Plus:** no maintenance fee (KFS, September 2026); you just lose the free services below a Rs 25,000 monthly average.
- **NBP:** Rs 50 a month on any current account averaging below Rs 5,000. NBP's own pages disagree on the Choice account: the product page says Rs 100,000 for businesses, the FAQ says no minimum, and the schedule says Rs 25,000 in the first month.
- **Meezan Rupee Current:** opens with Rs 100, with no deductions on low balance.

Running charges add up too. At Bank AL Habib, branch SMS alerts cost Rs 450 a month for entity accounts against Rs 255 for sole proprietors, and cheque leaves Rs 35 each. For more fees, see [bank charges in Pakistan](/money/guides/bank-charges-pakistan/).

## Do business bank accounts earn profit?

Current accounts pay nothing. If your business keeps spare cash, a savings account pays profit, but **less than an individual earns**. Since 1 August 2026, the State Bank's minimum deposit rate applies only to individuals with up to Rs 10 million, so banks pay businesses less.

| Bank | Rate for non-individuals | Period |
|---|---|---|
| HBL | 9.50% on savings accounts | Oct to Dec 2026 |
| Bank Alfalah | 9.50% on PLS Savings | From 21 Aug 2026 |
| MCB | 9.00% on rupee savings | Aug to Dec 2026 |
| UBL | 8.00% up to Rs 50 million | Oct 2026 |

Meezan's **Plus Account** is a current account that pays some profit and is open to sole proprietors, partnerships and companies. It paid only 0.19% a year in August and September 2026, so it is mainly for its free services at a Rs 200,000 average. For individual rates, see [savings account profit rates](/money/guides/savings-account-profit-rates/).

## Should a freelancer or sole proprietor use a business account?

Check how your clients pay you first. **Wise can't send rupees to business accounts** in Pakistan; the recipient must be a private individual, so a Wise payout needs a personal account.

If you are paid from abroad for online work, banks such as Bank AL Habib also offer freelancer accounts linked to a foreign currency ESFCA (Exporter's Special Foreign Currency Account). See [freelancer payment methods](/business/guides/freelancer-payment-methods-pakistan/) and [Wise in Pakistan](/money/guides/wise-in-pakistan/). If you need a loan for the business, see [business loans in Pakistan](/money/guides/business-loan-pakistan/).
